Bringing Books to Life

Ever wondered how we make our audiobooks? Discover the journey from a book on a shelf to a fully accessible audio production.

The Request: Meet Rebecca

Rebecca asked Calibre Audio to create an audiobook version of The Declaration by Gemma Malley. The team set out to make sure every pupil in the class could experience the same story, regardless of how they read:

Overseeing the Story: Meet Kieran

Once we have a copy of the printed book, our in-house production team gets started. Kieran is the Senior Studio Engineer at Calibre Audio:

Recording in Progress: Meet the Narrator

Joanna is an actress and a volunteer for Calibre Audio. Her training and skills are vital in bringing the words on the page to life:

Pressing Record to Pressing Play: Meet Ben

The recording might be complete, but the work isn’t finished. Checking for quality and structure are integral to making a great listening experience. Ben is Calibre Audio’s Production Assistant:

Quote as follows: “I check recordings for errors, looking for issues like background noise or microphone bumps that can disrupt the listening experience. Once everything is correct, the audio is mastered for a smooth, consistent experience.”

Production Ends, The Journey Begins

Because of that one request and the work that followed, The Declaration is now available as an audiobook. Thousands of young adults who couldn’t read the physical book can now read along with classmates thanks to Calibre Audio's team of staff and volunteers. Now, every pupil in that classroom can engage with the same story, together.

"Now we have the audiobook, every child is included, no one misses out. Calibre Audio has helped us break barriers in the classroom, for which I am truly grateful."

Help bring the next book to life

Every audiobook in our collection begins the same way: with someone asking for a book to be made accessible to every type of reader. We need your support to make as many books as we can accessible.

With your support, we can create more audiobooks so more people can access the stories that matter to them, whether in the classroom, at home, or on their own.
